Harira Chicken by Zarnak Sidhwa

Ingredients:

  • Chicken 1 kg
  • Oil 5-6 tbsp
  • Cinnamon 2-inch stick
  • Black peppercorns 10-12
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Finely chopped ginger 2-inch piece
  • Roughly chopped celery 1 stick
  • Broken dried red chillies 6-8
  • Shallots 15-20
  • Salt 1 tsp
  • Boiled chickpeas 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  • Lemon juice of 1 lemon
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves 2-3 tbsp
  • Fried seviyan for garnish
  • Celery stick to garnish
  • Lemon wedges to garnish

Method:

  1. Heat 2 tbsp oil, add cinnamon, black peppercorns, cumin seeds and saute till fragrant.
  2. Add ginger, celery, dried red chillies, shallots, salt, and turmeric powder and mix well. Grind into a fine paste.
  3. Heat 2-3 tbsp oil, add chicken, and cook till golden on both the sides.
  4. Heat the remaining oil; add the ground mixture and 1/2 cup water and saute for 3-4 minutes.
  5. Add the chicken pieces and mix well.
  6. Add lemon juice, coriander leaves, and mix.
  7. Now add 1 cup boiled chickpeas and mix again.
  8. Transfer into a serving plate.
  9. Garnish with fried seviyan, celery stick and a lemon wedge and serve hot.
