Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup plus 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 cups chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons margarine, melted
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 3-1/2 cups boiling water

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and 1/3 cup cocoa. Add in the water, margarine, and nuts. This will make a thick batter. Spread batter in a 9′x13′ baking dish.
  3. Mix brown sugar with 1/2 cup cocoa and sprinkle over batter.
  4. Place pan in oven and then pour boiling water over the batter. Bake for 45 minutes. Bubbles will appear around the edges. The top will be firm but will “float.”
  5. Serve warm.
